Root rot (Heterobasidion spp.) is a widespread pathogen in coniferous forests. The airborne spores most commonly infect fresh stumps, less commonly root collar lesions on living trees.
Through root contact, the fungal mycelium spreads to healthy trees growing nearby.
The biopreparation Rotstop® contains large capsule spores and can be used
for controlling root rot on pine and spruce stumps. The effect of Rotstop used to control rot
is based on competition between two living organisms, a pathogen and an antagonistic saprotroph.
